Joy Omewa: Nigeria striker joins Swedish champions BK Hacken on three-year deal

Super Falcons forward Joy Omewa has signed a three-year contract with Swedish champions BK Hacken after a prolific season in Denmark that saw her score 22 goals in 24 league matches.

The 23-year-old Nigeria international joins the Gothenburg-based side on a free transfer following her departure from English Women’s Championship club Nottingham Forest.

Her move makes her the second Nigerian player currently on the books at BK Hacken, where she will link up with experienced midfielder Halimatu Ayinde.

Omewa is expected to join her new club after international duty, as she is currently part of Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the Super Falcons are aiming to retain their continental title.

From Denmark double to Swedish champions

Omewa’s switch to Sweden follows a standout 2024/25 campaign with Danish side Fortuna Hjørring, where she established herself as one of the most lethal forwards in Scandinavian women’s football.

During that season, she struck 22 league goals in 24 appearances and played a central role in guiding Fortuna Hjørring to a domestic league and cup double.

Her exploits in front of goal attracted the attention of several European clubs, but BK Hacken moved decisively to secure her signature as they look to strengthen their attack for upcoming domestic and European campaigns.

The Damallsvenskan club, who have become a leading force in Swedish women’s football, see the Nigerian forward as a key addition to a squad already packed with international experience.

‘I worked a lot on being as efficient as possible’

Reflecting on her time in Denmark, Omewa said the spell with Fortuna Hjørring was transformative for her development as a striker.

“I mainly developed my ability to score goals, especially positional play in the penalty area. I worked a lot on mastering how to be as efficient as possible inside the box,” she told the club’s official website.

She added that the decision to join BK Hacken felt natural given the club’s reputation for nurturing talent and competing at the top level in Sweden.

” I know that BK Hacken is a fantastic club that helps its talents develop. I feel that this is the right place for me,” said the former Confluence Queens player.

‘A killer in the box’

BK Hacken’s football director, Martin Ericsson, said he believes Omewa’s profile is perfectly suited to the demands of the Swedish top flight.

” Joy is a physically dominant player with a lot of power, but also a striker who is involved in the game and a killer in the box. Her instinct for scoring goals is clear and she is always looking for the next opportunity,” Ericsson declared.

Omewa’s arrival is expected to add further depth and dynamism to Hacken’s forward line as they target more domestic silverware and look to make an impact in European competition.
