Joy Omewa: Nigeria striker joins Swedish champions BK Hacken on three-year deal

Nigeria forward Joy Omewa has signed a three-year contract with Swedish champions BK Hacken after completing a free transfer from English side Nottingham Forest.

The Super Falcons striker, 23, joins the Damallsvenskan club as a free agent following her departure from Forest, who play in the second tier of English women’s football.

Omewa becomes only the second Nigerian currently on the books at Hacken, where she will link up with experienced Super Falcons midfielder Halimatu Ayinde.

Prolific season in Denmark

Omewa arrives in Sweden on the back of a prolific spell in Denmark with Fortuna Hjørring, where she produced one of the standout individual campaigns in European women’s football in 2024/25.

The pacy attacker scored 22 league goals in 24 matches, helping Fortuna secure a domestic league and cup double and raising her profile across the continent.

Her form in front of goal in Denmark attracted interest from several clubs, but Hacken moved decisively to secure her signature as they look to strengthen their attack for domestic and European challenges.

Omewa said her time in the Danish league was decisive in sharpening her instincts as a penalty-box striker.

“I mainly developed my ability to score goals, especially positional play in the penalty area. I worked a lot on mastering how to be as efficient as possible inside the box,” she told the club’s official website.

‘Right place’ for next step

The Nigerian international said choosing Hacken was a straightforward decision, describing the Gothenburg-based side as the ideal environment to sustain her development.

” I know that BK Hacken is a fantastic club that helps its talents develop. I feel that this is the right place for me,” added the former Confluence Queens player.

Hacken, who have established themselves as one of Scandinavia’s leading women’s clubs, are regular contenders for the Damallsvenskan title and have featured in European competition in recent seasons.

Hacken praise ‘killer in the box’

BK Hacken’s football director, Martin Ericsson, believes Omewa’s blend of physical strength and finishing ability will add a new dimension to the team’s forward line.

” Joy is a physically dominant player with a lot of power, but also a striker who is involved in the game and a killer in the box. Her instinct for scoring goals is clear and she is always looking for the next opportunity,” Ericsson declared.

Focus on continental glory

Before linking up with her new club, Omewa is focused on international duty with Nigeria at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

She is part of the Super Falcons squad aiming to retain the continental title, with Hacken expected to integrate her into the squad following the conclusion of the tournament.

Omewa’s move to Sweden marks another step in an increasingly international career that has already taken her from Nigeria’s Confluence Queens to Denmark, England and now one of Scandinavia’s top clubs.
