Spain’s triumphant World Cup homecoming in Madrid has taken an unexpected twist after a fan’s cheeky banner publicly called for a boxing fight between Argentina’s Leandro Paredes and Spain star Gavi.

The banner, thrown onto the top deck of La Roja’s open-top bus towards teenage sensation Lamine Yamal during Monday’s victory parade, has gone viral in Spain after its message was revealed.

Spain landed in the capital on Monday following their 1-0 win over Argentina on Sunday night, securing a second world title and sparking huge celebrations that spilled across central Madrid and into Plaza de Cibeles.

Streets packed for historic celebration

It was an unforgettable day in the Spanish capital as tens of thousands of fans flooded the streets to salute the new world champions.

The team’s bus crawled through Madrid’s avenues amid a sea of red shirts, flares and flags, with supporters chanting players’ names and replaying key moments from the final.

Spanish newspaper Marca reported that the atmosphere mixed jubilation with moments of humour and intrigue – none more so than when a banner aimed directly at Lamine Yamal was hurled up to the players on the top deck.

Lamine Yamal’s brother steals the spotlight

On one side of the banner was a picture of Lamine Yamal’s younger brother, Ken, whose reactions in the stands during the World Cup had already made him a viral sensation on social media.

Ken’s exuberant celebrations in the stadium had been repeatedly shown on television throughout the tournament, turning him into a cult figure among Spanish fans.

But it was the other side of the banner that sparked laughter among the squad.

Written in bold letters were the words: “ليلة العام السابع. باريديس ضد جافي” – “Seventh Year Night. Paredes vs Gavi” – a direct reference to the hugely popular event organised by Spanish content creator Ibai Llanos, in which celebrities and internet personalities from different fields face off in high-profile boxing bouts.

According to Marca, the players burst out laughing when they read the message.

Lamine Yamal, who is emerging as one of Spain’s biggest stars, saw the banner and read the challenge.

His response, quoted by Marca, was brief but instantly picked up by fans online: “اراكم هناك” – “See you there.”

The remark has fuelled social media chatter over the imagined showdown between Spain midfielder Gavi and Argentina’s Paredes, two of the most combative figures from the World Cup final.

Fans target Paredes after bruising final

Marca reported that Paredes was one of the Argentine players who committed the most fouls during the final and noted that many Spanish supporters had branded him “one of the toughest players” on the pitch.

The tension between the sides boiled over during a clash in which Paredes struck Spain defender Eric Garcia. Gavi stepped in to defend his team-mate, prompting Paredes to lash out at him as well, even after the final whistle.

That confrontation appears to have inspired the tongue-in-cheek boxing call-out on the banner, transforming the on-field altercation into a fantasy grudge match for fans.
