Maduka Okoye: Super Eagles goalkeeper accused of abuse and neglect by ex-partner after Cardi B spotlight

Super Eagles and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is facing a storm of online scrutiny after his former partner, Jelicia Westhoff, published a series of emotionally charged posts on Instagram accusing him of abuse, infidelity and failing to care for their son.
The allegations emerged just days after Okoye drew global attention off the pitch through high-profile public appearances with US rapper Cardi B at Paris Fashion Week and later during a dinner engagement in Venice, Italy.
The striking images and videos of Okoye and Cardi B together rapidly went viral, fuelling gossip across social media and making the 24‐year‐old one of Nigeria’s most discussed footballers away from football in recent weeks.
But as conversations about his growing celebrity profile continued, Westhoff broke her silence with a lengthy Instagram Story in which she set out serious claims about their past relationship.
‘You abused me… cheated on me with men and women’
In her posts, Westhoff said she had previously chosen to remain quiet in order not to derail Okoye’s career, but now felt compelled to speak.
“Imagine I shut my fing mouth, lied about what you did to me, so you could continue your career and all you do is fing embarrass us,” she wrote.
Westhoff, who has a child with Okoye, claimed she had been a key support for the goalkeeper before he rose to prominence, alleging that she made personal sacrifices to help him during the early stages of his professional journey.
“You make me look like a bitter baby mother when I helped you when no one was there for you. I made you. No one knew who you were,” she said in another part of the message.
She went on to accuse Okoye of both emotional abuse and repeated cheating during their time together.
“Instead of loving us, you abused me. Cheated on me with men and women.”
The posts did not provide dates or specific incidents to substantiate the claims.
Claims over son and co‐parenting
Westhoff also alleged that Okoye had failed in his responsibilities as a father towards their child.
“You don’t take care of your one and only son. I don’t want to be with you. I will never forgive you,” she wrote.
She said she had attempted to maintain a cordial co‐parenting relationship with the Nigeria international, but argued that remaining quiet had not improved the situation.
“Being nice and peaceful brings you nowhere. You are a rat and I wish I was just like you, but I tried for my son to be a good co-parent to erase your wrongdoings because you made me believe that I was the problem.”
Westhoff did not indicate whether any legal or formal complaints had been made.
No response from Okoye as debate grows online
The posts have triggered intense debate across social media platforms, with fans and commentators sharply divided in their reactions.
Some users expressed sympathy for Westhoff and said Okoye should address the claims directly, while others urged restraint, stressing that the allegations are unverified and represent only her account of the relationship.
As of the time of writing, Okoye has not made any public statement in response to the accusations. No independent evidence has been presented publicly to corroborate the claims contained in Westhoff’s Instagram Story.
BBC Sport has not been able to reach representatives of the player for comment, and Westhoff has not provided additional documentation in support of her statements.
Spotlight beyond the pitch
The controversy comes at a moment when Okoye’s profile has been rising well beyond football circles.
His appearances alongside Cardi B at Paris Fashion Week and later in Venice were widely shared by entertainment and sports outlets, drawing attention to the goalkeeper far from his performances for club and country.
The latest allegations have now shifted focus from his burgeoning celebrity image to questions about his private life and conduct away from the game.
Okoye, who has been capped by Nigeria’s Super Eagles and plays his club football in Europe, remains one of the country’s most recognisable goalkeepers. It is unclear whether the social media storm will have any impact on his career or commercial partnerships.
For now, the situation remains a developing story centred on serious but unproven claims made on social media, with the footballer yet to offer his version of events in public.
