Cote d’Ivoire coach confident of overcoming Nigeria in WAFU B semi-final

Cote d’Ivoire U-20 coach Oussou Israel says his side’s tactical flexibility and impressive group-stage form can help them defeat Nigeria’s Flying Eagles in Wednesday’s 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship semi-final.

The hosts have emerged as one of the leading teams in the tournament after winning both of their Group A matches without conceding a goal. Cote d’Ivoire opened their campaign with a 5-0 victory over Benin Republic before beating Niger 2-0, finishing top of the group with six points, seven goals scored and none conceded.

Nigeria, by contrast, reached the semi-finals after finishing second in Group B. Coach Abdul Maikaba’s team began strongly, beating Ghana 4-2 and then defeating Togo 3-0 to secure qualification with one match still to play.

However, a much-changed Flying Eagles side suffered a 2-0 defeat by Burkina Faso in their final group fixture. The result allowed the Young Stallions to move above Nigeria and left the Flying Eagles facing the unbeaten hosts in the last four.

Despite Nigeria’s status as a historic force in youth football, Israel believes his players are capable of producing a major result. The Flying Eagles have won a record seven U-20 Africa Cup of Nations titles, but the Cote d’Ivoire coach considers his team’s ability to adapt tactically a significant strength.

The encounter at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro will determine more than just a place in the final. The winners will also qualify automatically for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Cote d’Ivoire will have home support behind them and can draw confidence from their unbeaten run and defensive record. Nigeria, though, have the greater record at continental level and will also take encouragement from their previous success against the Young Elephants in youth competitions.

The Flying Eagles’ defeat by Burkina Faso was their first setback of the tournament, following convincing wins over Ghana and Togo. Their performances in those opening matches demonstrated the attacking quality available to Maikaba, even though the final group game ended in disappointment.

Cote d’Ivoire’s results have been even more emphatic. Their five-goal win against Benin Republic provided an early statement of intent, while the victory over Niger confirmed their place at the top of Group A.

The semi-final therefore brings together a Nigerian side with considerable experience and pedigree and an Ivorian team that has impressed with its organisation, flexibility and consistency.

With a place in the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana at stake, as well as regional bragging rights, both teams will be targeting victory at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium and a place in the WAFU B final.
