Iwobi strike and Bassey resilience earn Fulham win over Hull City

Alex Iwobi scored the only goal as Fulham secured a 1-0 Premier League victory over Hull City at Craven Cottage, with Calvin Bassey helping them withstand late pressure to claim their first league win of the season.

Iwobi broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute with a composed finish, giving Fulham the lead after a controlled performance in midfield. His contribution proved decisive as the hosts held on for all three points.

Bassey played the full 90 minutes at the heart of Fulham’s defence and helped keep a clean sheet. His performance became even more important after Fulham were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time, when Ryan Sessegnon was shown a red card.

Despite the numerical disadvantage and sustained pressure from Hull City, Bassey provided the defensive authority required to protect Fulham’s narrow advantage. His physical strength, aerial ability at set-pieces and calmness in possession helped limit the visiting side’s attacking threat.

The performances of the two Nigeria internationals will be welcomed by Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa and Nigeria’s national team selectors, with important international fixtures approaching.

Iwobi once again demonstrated his ability to influence matches from midfield. His creativity, tactical flexibility and eye for goal enabled him to help control the tempo before delivering the moment that determined the contest.

Bassey, meanwhile, continued to strengthen his standing as one of the most dependable central defenders in English football. The match also underlined the understanding he has developed with Iwobi, who operates ahead of him in Fulham’s starting line-up.

Bassey recently passed the milestone of 100 Premier League appearances, and the pair have become an important part of Fulham’s structure. Their contrasting qualities provide balance, with Iwobi offering invention and attacking threat while Bassey supplies defensive security.

Their form also represents a significant boost for Nigeria. With key international matches drawing closer, the continued high-level performances of two Super Eagles players in the Premier League give the national side a strong foundation.

Iwobi’s creative influence and Bassey’s defensive reliability are attracting increasing attention from opposition managers and international teams across Europe. Together, they have formed a partnership capable of creating problems for opponents at both club and national-team level.
