Landon Emenalo keeps Nigeria option open after Celtic debut

Landon Emenalo remains eligible to play for Nigeria despite representing the United States and England at youth level, and has not ruled out following his father Michael into the Super Eagles senior team.
The 18-year-old made his professional debut for Celtic in their 7-1 victory over Hearts, coming on to play the final 30 minutes of the match.
Emenalo is currently on loan at Celtic from English Premier League club Chelsea. Like his father, a former Super Eagles left-back who featured at USA 94, he primarily plays at left-back but can also operate in central defence or midfield.
Born in the United States of America and brought up in England, Emenalo has already appeared for both countries in youth football. Those appearances have not prevented him from being eligible to represent Nigeria at senior international level.
Family sources say Emenalo has not closed the door on playing for Nigeria. However, he is not planning to make an immediate decision about his international future as he focuses on establishing himself at a higher level of club football.
That means a near-term approach from the Super Eagles would not be expected to lead to a commitment, with Emenalo currently prioritising his development during his loan spell at Celtic.
His first-team appearance against Hearts marked the latest step in a career that began at Chelsea, where he remains contracted. The move to Scotland has given him an opportunity to gain senior experience while continuing to develop his versatility across the defence and midfield.
Emenalo’s international options remain open because of his background and youth-level representation. Nigeria could therefore become a possibility in the future, although there is no indication that he is ready to select a senior national team at this stage.
His father, Michael Emenalo, represented Nigeria as a left-back, making Landon’s potential decision a possible continuation of the family’s connection with the Super Eagles. For now, though, the younger Emenalo’s priority is to build his club career before deciding whether to commit internationally.
