UCL: Osimhen’s Napoli caught napping at Anfield as Salah and Nunez strike

By Wale Mustapha

Liverpool reacted late to end Napoli’s perfect start to UEFA Champions League season with 2-0 win at Anfield on Tuesday.

Mohammed Salah and Darwin Nunez scored late to ensure the Kop ended second and put a halt to Napoli’s impressive start to the campaign.

It was also a match Super Eagles’ forward, Victor Osimhen failed to register a shot on target, first time its happening this season to Nigerian in all competitions.

The Kops put up a late show to ensure Jürgen Klopp’s 100th match as a manager in the UEFA Champions League and his 400th as Redsboss ended in victory.

Napoli were more conservative in the opening moments of the match as they were on the back foot socking pressure from their hosts. It almost let them down as Thiago Silva hit the bar with few minutes to end first half.

With a little tweak in the formation for the second stanza, Napoli could not pose much threat to Liverpool’s goal Van Dink ensuring Osimhen, who has being in fine form recently remain isolated and short of supplies from his midfielders.

The Nigerian forward was later swapped for Giovanni Simeone late one when the result was 1-0 but his replacement was much like Osimhen as he could offer less to help the Luciano Spalleti side.

Whilst it may prove inconsequential to how Group A shapes up, Luciano Spalletti’s men taste defeat for the first time this campaign, and Klopp’s side get revenge for a heavy defeat in the reverse fixture.
