Julius Aghahowa: Former Nigeria striker reveals why Ghana lost to Uruguay

By Olu Dare
Former Nigeria striker Julius Aghahowa said Ghana lost to Uruguay because they lacked spirit of urgency in their game.
Despite needing a draw to secure qualification to the Round of 16, the Black Stars lost 2-0 to the South Americans with Giorgian de Arrascaeta bagging a brace.
Andre Ayew had a chance to put the West Africans ahead, however, his poor penalty was saved by goalkeeper Sergio Rochet Alvarez – who guessed the right direction.
“Ghana got it wrong from the start, there was no spirit of urgency in their play,” Aghahowa said ruefully on Brila FM.
“The fire started from the second half when they were already 2-0 down. If they had started that way from the first half, things might have looked differently.
“They were punished, they fought for it but it was not enough to secure a win or even a draw.”
Otto Addo has resigned as Ghana boss following their World Cup group-stage elimination. The 47-year-old former Ghana international replaced the sacked Milovan Rajevac in February, initially as interim boss, and was given a deal until the end of December.
“I always said if we qualified for the World Cup I’d resign afterwards, even if we were world champions. My family see our future in Germany,” he said.
