CAF Confederation Cup: 10-man Rivers United stun Motema Pembe in Angola

Rivers United boosted their chances of progressing to the knockout stage of the Caf Confederation Cup with a crucial 1-0 away win over Motema Pembe of Angola in a group stage encounter on Sunday.

The Nigeria Premier Football League champions went into the contest on the back of a 3-0 victory over  ASEC Mimosas at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium a week ago in swift response to a 3-0 losing start at Diable Noirs.

This time, in Luanda, the Nigerians saw their hopes for a positive away result suffered a mere setback following the sending off defender Ebube Duru three minutes from the half time break.

After a goalless break, Stanley Eguma’s men finally broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute thanks to a rebounded effort goal from Paul Acquah at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda.

Despite late fightback from the hosts threw to save their faces from embarrassing home loss but the resolute Rivers United defense warded off all the threats to claim the maximum points.

The win takes the Pride of Rivers to the top place in the Group B with six points from three group stage matches.

They will be hosting Motema Pembe who are placed bottom of the group with two points in the reverse fixture.
