Bayern Munich and Dutch football great, Roy Makaay believes Nigerian defender, Calvin Bassey deserves more credits for qualities than criticism he’s getting at Ajax.
Bassey joined Ajax in the summer in a big money move from Rangers after his impressive season with the Scottish giants as he guided them to win the Scottish Cup and reached the Europa League final.
The bulky defender has had a bit part start to life in the Eredivise and was tagged as one of the culprits for Ajax’s dismal start to the season that led to the sacking of former manager Alfred Schreuder.
Makaay who was impressed with Bassey’s performance in Ajax’s comeback win over Vitesse Arnhem insists the defender is better than many people think in the Netherlands.
“I’m a little bit biased. Of course I worked great with him last year. He was even my neighbor in Glasgow,” Makaay said on ESPN.
“I saw him shine again, that’s the Bassey I know. A smiling Calvin. When he smiles, Calvin feels good. He came in excellently today, for what he had to do. Defensively he was better.”
Bassey has scored one goal and provided five assists in 31 games (with only five starts) for Ajax this season.
