WAFU-B U20 Women’s Cup: Nigeria – Ghana: Falconets aim to claim the title in Kumasi

By Saheed Afolabi

Nigeria will relish celebrating the maiden WAFU-B U20 Women’s Cup title against Ghana on Saturday.

The final further rekindle the long standing rivalry between the two West African nations in Kumasi.

Both sides have previous represented Africa at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup on more than six occasions, including at Costa Rica 2022, where Nigeria reached the quarterfinal but Ghana crashed from the group stage.

Christopher Danjuma’s side has scored 19 goals after four games and conceded none.

Danjuma, who doubles as Nasarawa Amazons manager couldn’t make it to the season-ending Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six at the end of the regular season.

Similar fortunes for Yusif Basigi, whose Hasaacas Ladies lost the Ghanaian title to Ampem Darkoa on penalties.

And the final match will offer both coaches a huge chance to bury the disappointment of missing out on their respective domestic league crowns.

Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football has appointed Ivorien official, Natacha Gerardine Konan as referee for Saturday’s WAFU B U20 Women Championship final match between arch-rivals Nigeria and Ghana in Kumasi.
Her compatriot, Ndeko Edwige Appia will be the assistant referee 1, while the Burkinabe duo of Ami Kouma and Jacqueline Nikiema will be assistant referee 2 and fourth official respectively.
Baptista Mariette Toi from Benin Republic will serve as match commissioner and Ghanaian Augustina Fugah will be in the role of referee assessor.
The match commences at 6.30 pm Ghana time (7.30 pm Nigeria time) at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi on Saturday.
