AFCON 2023: Super Eagles trio make Team of the Tournament

Three players from Nigeria’s senior men’s national team that finished second made the team of the tournament at the just concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Technical Study Group (TSG) revealed the team of the tournament on Wednesday, with the trio of Ola Aina, William Troost Ekong, and Ademola Lookman on the starting XI.

Nottingham Forest star Aina and Player of the tournament, Ekong occupy the defensive department.

Ekong scored three goals for the West African side in leading the team to a silver medal finish.

Lookman also scored three goals for the Super Eagles as he also played a pivotal role for the three-time African champions at the competition.

Three players from title winning side, Cote D’Ivoire also made the team of the tournament, including Ghislain Konan, Jean Michael Seri, and Franck Kessie.

Bronze-winning South Africa and fourth-placed side, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) both had two players on the team of the tournament.

For the Bafana Bafana, the best goalkeeper of the tournament, Ronwen Williams, and Teboho Mokoena are on the team.

Chancel Mbeba and Yohane Wissa represented the DRC, while tournament’s top scorer, Emilio Nsue completed the tea of the tournament which will coached by the winning Ivorian coach, Emerse Fae.
