Al Ahly back Hussein Ammouta after anger rises following Al Qanah draw
Al Ahly have decided to retain manager Hussein Ammouta and give him their full backing after a 3-3 draw with Al Qanah triggered significant anger within the club.
The Egyptian Premier League match at Cairo Stadium on Wednesday saw Al Ahly surrender the lead before rescuing a point in stoppage time. Moroccan defender Achraf Dari scored in the 90+3rd minute to make it 3-3.
The result left Al Ahly second in the table on 17 points, four behind leaders Pyramids, who have a 100% record. They are one point ahead of third-placed Zamalek. Al Qanah moved to 11th with eight points.
Speaking on ON Sport, broadcaster Ibrahim Abdel Jawad said the result had prompted a strong reaction from Al Ahly’s officials and supporters.
“There is significant anger at Al Ahly, and three decisions have already been taken after tonight’s draw,” he said.
One of the measures being seriously considered is the suspension of players’ financial dues until results improve.
A meeting has also been scheduled for Thursday involving the players, Ammouta and Al Ahly football director Wael Gomaa. The discussions will focus on the team’s recent performances and the response required after the draw with Al Qanah.
Despite the frustration surrounding the result, the club has decided not to make a change in the dugout. Ammouta will remain in charge and has been assured that his position is not under threat.
“The third decision we have learned about is to renew confidence in manager Hussein Ammouta, confirm that there will be no action against him and give him full backing to continue his work in the coming period,” Abdel Jawad added.
