Mbappe closes in on Benzema’s Champions League assist record after Real Madrid win

Kylian Mbappe moved within one assist of Karim Benzema’s French record in UEFA Champions League history after scoring and creating a goal in Real Madrid’s 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig.

The France forward set up Real Madrid’s second goal for Arda Guler with a precise headed pass before scoring the third himself at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday evening.

According to statistics provider Opta, Mbappe now has 26 assists in the competition, putting him level with France’s former World Cup-winning captain Zinedine Zidane.

Benzema remains the leading French player for Champions League assists with 27. Thierry Henry, the former Arsenal and Barcelona forward, is fourth on the list with 25.

Real Madrid’s victory took them to nine points and fourth place in the Champions League standings. They are level on points with leaders Paris Saint-Germain, with the difference between them determined by goal difference.

RB Leipzig remain on three points and sit 29th in the table.
