Al Hilal face midfield dilemma as Ruben Neves set for up to four weeks out

Al Hilal could be without Ruben Neves for three to four weeks after the Portugal midfielder suffered a muscle injury in the 2-0 win over Al Fateh in the 12th round of the Roshn Saudi League.

The injury has created an early selection problem for manager Simone Inzaghi, with Neves regarded as one of the most important components of his midfield. He was unable to complete the Al Fateh match normally and was then absent from Al Hilal’s 2-0 victory over Shabab Al Ahli of the United Arab Emirates in the fourth round of the AFC Champions League Elite.

The club are now waiting for a clearer assessment of the player’s condition and the length of his recovery.

Speaking on the television programme Dorina Ghair, journalist Hamad Al-Sowailhi said Neves had sustained the muscle problem during the match against Al Fateh. He added that the midfielder was expected to undergo a treatment and rehabilitation programme lasting between three and four weeks.

That timeframe could rule Neves out of several of Al Hilal’s upcoming matches, although his return will depend on the progress of his rehabilitation.

Neves’ absence would remove more than a defensive presence from Inzaghi’s side. The Portugal international is also central to the way Al Hilal control matches, helping to set the tempo, move the ball through midfield and create opportunities with his passing from deeper positions.

His contribution extends to the construction of attacks and the organisation of those around him. He frequently acts as the link between midfield and attack, while his accuracy allows him to break through an opponent’s defensive lines.

That range of responsibilities makes replacing him a significant challenge for Inzaghi. The Italian will need to decide whether to redistribute duties among the existing midfielders or turn to other options while Neves completes his recovery programme.

Al Hilal are listed to play Al Ettifaq in the Roshn Saudi League on 07 November 2026, adding to the focus on whether Neves will be available during the coming period.
