Arokodare joins Ajax on season-long loan as Nigerian link with Dutch giants grows

Tolu Arokodare has joined Ajax on a season-long loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the Dutch club securing an option to make the move permanent as the Nigeria striker becomes the eighth Super Eagles player to represent the Amsterdam side.

The 25-year-old’s switch to the Eredivisie ends an uncertain summer following a difficult first campaign at Wolves, where he registered six goals and two assists but struggled for form, fitness and consistent minutes.

Both Wolves and Ajax have confirmed the agreement, which runs to the end of the 2024-25 season. Arokodare remains under contract at Molineux until the summer of 2027, while Ajax hold a non-obligatory option to buy for a fee reported to be around €22m.

Ajax will pay Arokodare’s full wages during the loan and have also agreed a separate loan fee with Wolves. The Premier League club could receive additional bonus payments depending on Ajax’s performance, including qualification for European competition while the forward is in Amsterdam.

Arokodare leaves England after a year overshadowed by injury problems, limited opportunities and a reported disagreement on the training ground with Wolves’ new manager. The move offers him the chance to relaunch his career under recently appointed Ajax head coach Michel.

The striker will wear the number 99 shirt at the Johan Cruyff Arena. After signing his contract, club officials said Arokodare had made clear how excited he was to join Ajax and start a new chapter in his career.

Long Nigerian line at Ajax

Arokodare’s arrival continues a well-established Nigerian connection with Ajax stretching back more than 30 years.

He follows a group of Super Eagles players who have previously appeared for the four-time European champions: Finidi George, Nwankwo Kanu, Christopher Kanu, Sunday Oliseh, Tijani Babangida, Pius Ikedia and Calvin Bassey.

That history has given the move added resonance among Nigeria supporters, who see Ajax as a club with a proven track record of trusting and developing Nigerian talent alongside its renowned youth system and European pedigree.

The transfer is expected to further increase the Dutch club’s following in Nigeria over the coming season, with many Super Eagles fans likely to track Arokodare’s progress closely in Amsterdam.

Ajax, who last won the Eredivisie in 2022, will be hoping Arokodare can help spearhead a return to the top of Dutch football.
