Balogun Voices Frustration as Mainz Succumb to Frankfurt’s Dominance

Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun expressed disappointment after his club, Mainz, suffered a resounding 3-0 defeat at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt in the German Bundesliga on Saturday. Balogun, who is gearing up for the upcoming friendly matches with the national team against Poland and Serbia, lamented the team’s performance in an interview posted on Mainz’s official Twitter account.
Despite the presence of Balogun and Nigerian teammate Anthony Ujah in the lineup, Mainz couldn’t withstand the relentless attacking prowess of Eintracht Frankfurt. The first half proved decisive, with Kevin-Prince Boateng, Luka Jovic, and Ante Rebic securing the win for Frankfurt in the sixth, 23rd, and 41st minutes, respectively.
Reflecting on the disappointing outcome, Balogun remarked, “It was a different performance from the Pokal game, but the result was the same. We gave away those goals far too easily. We need to analyze this one hard and draw the conclusions from it.”
The defeat leaves Mainz struggling in the relegation play-off zone, with 25 points from 27 games and just seven fixtures remaining. Balogun’s focus will now shift to international duties as he joins the Super Eagles for the friendlies against Poland and Serbia, hoping to regroup and contribute positively to Nigeria’s performance on the global stage.
