Barcelona step up pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez with Deco visit

Barcelona have taken a significant step in their attempt to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, with sporting director Deco travelling to Madrid for talks over a potential summer transfer.

Deco made the trip on Tuesday alongside his assistant, Joao Amaral, in an effort to move negotiations for the Argentina international forward forward. The visit is regarded as a serious move by Barcelona as they seek to make Alvarez their leading attacking addition.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Deco and Joao Amaral are scheduled to meet Alvarez’s representative, Fernando Hidalgo, in the coming hours. The discussions are expected to focus on the player’s situation and the possibility of him leaving Atletico Madrid to join Barcelona.

Alvarez, 26, is Barcelona’s main target for strengthening their attack. The Catalan club believe the forward’s own desire to move to Barcelona could help them make progress in a deal, although Atletico have so far maintained their opposition to allowing him to leave for their La Liga rivals.

That stance remains the principal obstacle to Barcelona’s plans. Atletico are still refusing to sanction the transfer despite Alvarez’s reported wish to make the switch, but Barcelona’s delegation hopes Tuesday’s meeting in Madrid can accelerate the process.

The club have made clear that Alvarez is their preferred target for the forward line. They also recognise that the player could play an important role in determining whether negotiations develop further by reaffirming his intention to leave Atletico.

The Argentina forward remains under contract with Atletico Madrid until 2030. Barcelona nevertheless hope he will provide another indication that he wants to depart, believing that such a step could increase the pressure for an agreement.

The Madrid visit represents one of the clearest signs yet of Barcelona’s determination to pursue the deal. Rather than simply monitoring the situation, the club have now sent their sporting director and his assistant to hold direct discussions with the player’s representative.

However, no agreement has been reached and Atletico’s position has not changed. The outcome of the expected meeting between Barcelona’s representatives and Hidalgo could therefore prove important to the next stage of the negotiations.

Barcelona’s interest is centred on Alvarez’s potential arrival during the current summer window, while Atletico continue to hold the contractual advantage through the length of the player’s deal. For now, the transfer depends on whether Barcelona can persuade Atletico to reconsider and whether Alvarez offers the further public or private indication of his desire to leave that the Catalan club are hoping for.
