Brighton debut for Nigerian prospect Zadok Yohanna after record AIK transfer

Brighton & Hove Albion gave Nigerian forward Zadok Yohanna his first appearance for the club as Fabian Hurzeler’s side beat AS Roma 3-0 in a pre-season friendly at the American Express Stadium on Saturday.

The 20-year-old came on with 30 minutes remaining, replacing Diego Gomez, to make his unofficial debut after completing a high-profile move from AIK during the summer.

Brighton paid an Allsvenskan-record €28 million for Yohanna, with the total value of the deal capable of reaching €30 million if performance-related bonuses are achieved. The Premier League club won the race for his signature despite competition from several European clubs, underlining the importance Brighton placed on securing the highly regarded prospect.

Yohanna was introduced with Brighton already in control and quickly offered a glimpse of the attributes that made him one of the most sought-after young players in the transfer market.

His pace was immediately evident as he repeatedly challenged Roma’s defenders, carried the ball into open space and maintained a high level of intensity throughout his half-hour on the pitch. The Nigerian forward also demonstrated a willingness to work continuously when Brighton were without possession, contributing to an energetic performance in his first outing for the Seagulls.

Hurzeler used 21 players during the match as Brighton continued their preparations with an impressive result against the Italian club.

Georginio Rutter put Brighton in front in the 29th minute with a superb curling effort from 20 yards. Yasin Ayari then added a second before half-time and completed the scoring with another goal after the interval, securing a convincing victory for the Premier League side.

For Yohanna, the match represented the first step in his Brighton career following a transfer that generated considerable attention in Sweden and beyond. His arrival came at a record price for a player moving from the Allsvenskan, while Brighton’s success in beating a number of European suitors reflected the level of interest in his potential.

Although the fixture was unofficial and formed part of Brighton’s pre-season schedule, Yohanna’s performance provided an encouraging early indication of what he may offer. His direct running, acceleration and work rate were among the most notable features of his introduction as he began adapting to his new team.

Brighton’s three goals ensured a comfortable result, but the appearance of Yohanna was the key moment from a Nigerian perspective.
