CAF’s Revised WAFCON 2026 Schedule Prioritises Player Welfare with Reduced Travel and Extended Rest Periods

The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), alongside the Local Organising Committee (LOC), has unveiled the official match schedule and kick-off times for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), introducing a competition calendar that places greater emphasis on player welfare through reduced travel and more generous recovery periods.
Scheduled to run from 26 July to 16 August 2026, the expanded 16-team tournament will be staged exclusively in Rabat and Casablanca. Compared with broader multi-city hosting models previously associated with major continental tournaments, the decision to concentrate matches in just two hubs and assign each group to a single base is expected to significantly cut travel time and logistical strain on participating teams.
Another notable feature of the newly released schedule is the spacing of fixtures, with teams generally benefiting from approximately three days between group-stage matches. The added recovery time should allow players to recuperate physically, reduce fatigue, and prepare more effectively for subsequent fixtures, while also giving coaching and medical staff valuable time for tactical planning and player management.
The tournament will kick off on 26 July at the Rabat Olympic Stadium with Algeria facing Senegal before hosts Morocco take on Kenya later the same evening. The competition concludes with the final in Rabat on 16 August 2026, where Africa’s new champions will be crowned.
Beyond competing for the continental title and the USD 1 million winners’ prize, teams will also be chasing qualification opportunities linked to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Among the headline group-stage fixtures is the anticipated Group C showdown between Nigeria and Zambia on 1 August, while Ghana and Cameroon meet in a key Group D encounter on 2 August.
The quarter-finals are scheduled for 8 and 9 August, followed by the semi-finals on 12 August in Rabat. Casablanca will host the World Cup play-off matches involving the quarter-final losers on 13 August, with the third-place match set for 15 August before the final on 16 August.
Group Draw
- Group A (Rabat): Morocco, Algeria, Senegal, Kenya
- Group B (Casablanca): South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Tanzania
- Group C (Rabat): Nigeria, Zambia, Egypt, Malawi
- Group D (Casablanca): Ghana, Cameroon, Mali, Cape Verde
By combining a two-city hosting model with consistent recovery windows of around three days between group matches, CAF’s revised WAFCON 2026 schedule is designed to ease the physical demands on players, minimise unnecessary travel, and help teams perform at their best throughout Africa’s premier women’s football tournament.
