Calvin Bassey earns applauds from Jamie Carragher and Fulham coach Silva

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria international Calvin Bassey has received high praise from both Jamie Carragher and Fulham head coach Marco Silva, for stellar performance in Fulham’s recent 3-2 victory against Liverpool at Craven Cottage.
The Super Eagles star has been rock solid for the Cottagers this season contributing both defensively and offensively in their push for European qualification.
Fulham are currently 9th on the English Premier League table, six points away from Chelsea, who are in sixth.
The 25-year-old has demonstrated his dependability this season, starting in 29 of their 32 Premier League matches, scoring two goals and earning praise for his solid performances at the heart of defence.
Jamie Carragher was full of praise for the Super Eagles’ centre-back on the Monday Night Football show.
“Last week, Calvin Bassey was fantastic. He plays in my position, and I was so impressed with him.”
Speaking on Sky Sports, Fulham head coach Marco Silva joined in praising the Nigerian.
“I know him very well, I’ve said it several times since he joined us after a really difficult spell in Ajax and his time at Rangers.
“We really believe in him. I really believe that he’s capable of playing at a very high level. He ticks all the boxes of what a modern footballer and modern defender must be.”
Quizzed about where Bassey needs to improve on his game, the Fulham manager revealed the 1.85m tall defender must improve on his ability in the air.
“He really has to improve his aerial duels. All the other things? He has them. He has the ability on the ball, he’s quick, and strong in the duels. He has to be more concentrated to be more focused in all the moments of the game.
“If he’s able to stay focused throughout the game, then he’s able to play the way he plays. He’s very aggressive and he’s very quick.”
