Dutch Eredivisie side Ajax sack Calvin Bassey’s manager
By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Nigeria defender Calvin Bassey is expected to get a new manager at Dutch Eredivisie side, Ajax after the club sacked Alfred Schreuder from active duty with immediate effect.
The manager’s contract ran till June 30, 2024, but has been terminated due to disappointing results and lack of development within the team being the main reason for this decision.
The management of the club according to a statement on the team website state that “it is not longer confident about their agreement.”
Assistant coach Matthias Kaltenbach’s contract will also be terminated with immediate effect.
Alfred Schreuder joined Ajax this summer, leaving Club Brugge. Previously, he was an assistant coach for Ajax from January 2018 to 2019.
His last game on Thursday with FC Volendam ended in a 1-1 draw which was the team’s sixth straight draws in the league.
The team’s last victory in the league came on October 22, 2022, with a 4-1 win over Waalwijk.
Unimpressive stings of results have seen Ajax drop to the fifth position on the league table, seven points behind leaders, Feyenoord.
Bassey in recent times has come under criticism from club followers and former players. The 23-year-old impressed on Thursday with attacking transition but couldn’t add to his lone goal tally for the season.
