Edison Cavani in advanced talks with Boca Juniors

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani is in advanced talks with Argentine giants Boca Juniors.

Cavani has barely played for United this season owing to injuries and with the club considering him surplus to requirements, he will be leaving in the summer as a free agent.

Overall he has managed to make just 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice in what has been a starkly contrasted his 2020/21 campaign where he netted 17 goals and ended the season as United’s starting striker.

He had been linked with Boca in the summer but United convinced him to stay as an understudy to Cristiano Ronaldo who has been the club’s main striker; the Mirror cites this as one of the reasons that Cavani has decided to leave this summer.

It is said that United assured Cavani that they would not be bringing in an additional striker at the end of last season, before moving to sign Ronaldo. The report also states that Cavani turned down several rival offers to remain at Old Trafford.

While Boca are the favorites to land the Uruguayan’s signature, a host of clubs including Atletico Madrid are said to be monitoring the player’s situation and will make a move should they fail to get some of their targets.

Boca who are currently second in Group B of the Argentine Premier Division wants to rejuvenate their side with signing of Cavani’s stature as they face an uphill struggle to progress in this season’s Copa Libertadores.
