Ethiopian officials appointed for Guinea-Bissau v Nigeria AFCON qualifier

Ethiopian referee Tewodros Mitiku will take charge of Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria in Bissau.

Mitiku will be supported by compatriots Fasika Biru Fasika and Tigle Belachew, who have been appointed first and second assistant referees respectively. Manuhe Woldetsadik completes the Ethiopian officiating team as fourth official.

The Group L fixture will be played at the Estadio Nacional 24 de Setembro, with kick-off scheduled for 5pm Nigerian time.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has also selected officials from Senegal and The Gambia. Yaya Balde of Senegal will serve as match commissioner, while former FIFA referee Papa Bakary Gassama of The Gambia has been appointed referee assessor.

Both teams won their opening matches in qualifying and are level on three points at the top of Group L.

Nigeria began their campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in Uyo. The Super Eagles fell behind before George Ilenikhena equalised, with substitute Moses Usor scoring the winning goal.

Guinea-Bissau started with a 2-0 victory against Tanzania. That result places the Djurtus first in the group on goal difference, ahead of Nigeria.

Tuesday’s match therefore gives Nigeria the chance to move into control of the group, while Guinea-Bissau will be looking to continue their winning start and strengthen their position at the summit.

The Super Eagles are pursuing qualification for the 2027 AFCON finals and will be seeking another positive result away from home.

Nigeria have already won in Bissau during a previous qualifying campaign. They beat Guinea-Bissau 1-0 there in the teams’ 2023 AFCON qualifying campaign.

However, Guinea-Bissau will take confidence from their opening victory and the opportunity to move clear at the top of Group L. The appointment of the match officials completes another key part of the preparations for the contest.
