Ferran Torres fires Spain to second World Cup title with late winner against Argentina

Ferran Torres has etched his name into Spanish football folklore after scoring the decisive goal that delivered Spain a second World Cup crown with a dramatic victory over Argentina in the 2026 final.

The Barcelona forward struck late on, pouncing on a cross from Nico Williams at the far post to finally break down a stubborn Argentine defence and seal the World Cup for La Roja.

Despite that, he maintained belief that he could deliver on the biggest stage.

According to Sport, Torres said he had “always believed” he was capable of scoring the goal that would carry Spain to the trophy, even as doubts gathered around him from pundits and fans.

The final in North America pitted Spain’s new generation against an Argentina side still built around the enduring presence of Lionel Messi.

Torres admitted that facing the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner raised the stakes and increased the psychological pressure on Spain, even though they felt they had the upper hand for much of the contest.

He explained that having Lionel Messi on the pitch “جعل المهمة اكثر صعوبة”، despite what he described as Spain’s superiority “داخل الملعب وخارجه”.

He added: “جميع المباريات النهايية تكون صعبة، لكن عندما يكون ميسي في الفريق المنافس، فان ذلك يسبب لك بعض التوتر. ومع ذلك، لقد وثقنا بانفسنا”.

Spain were forced to battle until the dying moments, with Torres describing how much the team had to suffer before finally settling the contest.

The match remained in the balance deep into the second half, with Argentina defending resolutely and looking to Messi for moments of inspiration, until Williams escaped down the flank and delivered the cross that Torres converted at the far post.

A new golden chapter for La Roja

The victory secures Spain’s second World Cup title, 16 years after their first, and signals the arrival of a new core of players capable of matching the achievements of the golden generation of Xavi, Iniesta and Iker Casillas.

Torres’s goal ensures his name will now sit alongside Iniesta’s in Spanish World Cup history – as the player whose strike crowned years of work and hope with the sport’s ultimate prize.
