Fleetwood Town’s Arsenal shock followed by awkward Sky Sports interview

Fleetwood Town’s remarkable League Cup victory over Premier League champions Arsenal was followed by an unscripted interview that prompted Sky Sports to issue four apologies.
The League Two side completed one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s history by beating Arsenal on penalties after the match finished 1-1 following 90 minutes.
The Cod Army converted all five of their spot-kicks, while goalkeeper Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimaraes’ effort to secure Fleetwood’s place in the quarter-finals.
Connor Hough, who scored the decisive penalty, was then interviewed live by Sky Sports programme Touchline shortly after the final whistle. The exchange quickly became uncomfortable after Hough used inappropriate language while describing his preparation for the decisive moment.
Asked what had been going through his mind before taking the final penalty, Hough replied: “I don’t know.”
He then added: “Pick my spot, hit it in the top corner and sprint as fast as I can. It’s unbelievable. I’m so proud of the lads. It shows how good a team we are.”
Presenter Juliet Ferrington immediately apologised for the language used during the interview. She repeated the apology at the end of the exchange, while Hough appeared embarrassed as he looked towards her and the camera.
When coverage returned to the studio, Sky Sports apologised twice more for the wording used during the live interview. The repeated apologies left some supporters confused, particularly after the initial apology had already been made on air.
Fleetwood’s result came despite Arsenal being described as the reigning Premier League champions, with the fourth-tier club producing a result that will rank among the competition’s most unexpected outcomes.
The match was also followed by fixture information listing Fleetwood in the English third tier on 31 October 2026, when they are scheduled to face Bristol Rovers. A separate listing shows Liverpool, from the Premier League, playing Arsenal on 1 November 2026.
Hough’s winning penalty completed a perfect shoot-out for Fleetwood, while Lynch’s save provided the crucial difference after the two sides could not be separated in normal time. The League Cup result means the Cod Army advance to the last eight, but the post-match broadcast attracted attention of its own because of the awkward exchange and Sky Sports’ four separate apologies.
