Flying Eagles Fall to Burkina Faso but Advance to Knockout Stage

Nigeria’s U20 side, the Flying Eagles, suffered a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in their final Group B match at the Lycee Scientifique de Yamoussoukro.

Despite the disappointing result, Nigeria had already done enough to secure qualification for the knockout stage of the competition.

Burkina Faso took the lead in the 23rd minute when Zongo rose highest to head home from a well-delivered corner kick.

The Young Stallions doubled their advantage in the 36th minute through a spectacular free-kick from Traore. The midfielder unleashed a thunderous effort from about 30 yards that flew past the Flying Eagles goalkeeper and into the back of the net, giving Burkina Faso a deserved 2-0 lead at halftime.

Nigeria struggled to gain control of the contest and found it difficult to create clear-cut chances against a disciplined Burkina Faso side.

The Flying Eagles showed greater urgency after the break, throwing numbers forward in search of a way back into the match. However, Burkina Faso remained resolute defensively and successfully held on to their two-goal advantage until the final whistle.

Attention now turns to the semi-finals, where Nigeria will face Ivory Coast with a place at the U20 AFCON tournament at stake. Victory in the encounter will secure the Flying Eagles’ qualification.
