France camp in turmoil as half-time row erupts during World Cup defeat to Spain

Reports in France have revealed a heated half-time confrontation inside the national team’s dressing room, with winger Ousmane Dembele at the centre of a row that overshadowed Les Bleus’ World Cup semi-final defeat by Spain.

France were beaten 2-0 by Spain on Tuesday in the 2026 World Cup semi-final in the United States, Canada and Mexico, a result that ended their hopes of reaching another final and exposed deep tensions within the squad.

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Dembele sparked a major flashpoint during the interval when he openly criticised how his team-mates were pressing Spain, particularly in their defensive organisation.

Dembele’s criticism sparks anger

L’Equipe reports that Dembele questioned the collective pressing strategy, arguing that France’s players were not applying pressure correctly on Spain’s build-up play. His comments, delivered in the dressing room at half-time, are said to have provoked anger among several team-mates.

Players are understood to have reacted sharply, feeling that Dembele himself had failed to perform his own defensive duties adequately during the first 45 minutes. The winger’s perceived lack of contribution off the ball became a flashpoint in a debate that underlined the mounting frustration within the squad.

The incident has been cited as a reflection of the fragile mood inside the French camp as the match slipped away from them.

Collapse after the break

France went into the break trailing 1-0 and still with a chance of turning the game around. But instead of a response, their level dropped further in the second half.

Spain added a second goal, killing off French hopes of a comeback and sending Didier Deschamps’ side out of the tournament at the semi-final stage. The performance after the interval has been linked by French media to the psychological impact of the dressing-room row, with the team looking disjointed and short of intensity.

The semi-final exit marks a significant setback for a side that had become accustomed to reaching the latter stages of major tournaments.

Mbappe questions France’s pressing

In a further twist, France captain Kylian Mbappe also expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s pressing against Spain, echoing – in public – some of the concerns reportedly raised by Dembele in private.

The forward criticised how France attempted to put pressure on their opponents, telling reporters after the match that the team’s pressing game had not been effective. While Mbappe did not single out individuals, his remarks reinforced the impression that there was disagreement within the squad over tactical execution and off-the-ball work.

His post-match comments have added to scrutiny of France’s approach and raised questions about unity in the camp at a crucial moment of the tournament.

Third-place play-off against England

Despite the disappointment of missing out on the final, France must quickly regroup. They are preparing to face England in the third-place play-off, scheduled for late on Sunday night, in a meeting between two sides attempting to salvage pride from a frustrating campaign.

England dropped into the play-off after a 2-1 defeat by Argentina in the other semi-final, setting up a high-profile clash for the bronze medal.

Both France and England arrived at the 2026 World Cup among the favourites, and the match will offer one last opportunity for players to restore some credit before leaving North America.

Spotlight on future of Les Bleus

The reported half-time altercation, combined with public questioning of tactics by senior figures such as Mbappe, is likely to intensify debate in France over the direction of the national team.

With the World Cup campaign ending in acrimony rather than glory, attention will now turn to how the French Football Federation and coaching staff respond to signs of unrest, and whether changes will be made ahead of the next international cycle.
