Augsburg manager Jess Thorup has assured that Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka is fully focused on the club’s upcoming Bundesliga match against Freiburg, despite his recent ordeal during international duty.
Onyeka arrived in Germany later than expected after a harrowing experience with the Super Eagles earlier this week.
Following Nigeria’s arrival in Libya on Sunday for a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against the Mediterranean Knights, Onyeka and his teammates were held hostage at a remote airport for several hours, with no food or drink.
The team ultimately boycotted the match and returned to Nigeria on Monday evening.
“It was crazy,” Thorup told Sport1, recounting Onyeka’s experience.
“They were stuck for 14, 16 hours without food or drink.
“He came back on Thursday morning, and everything is okay. He’s fully focused on the Freiburg game,” said the Augsburg manager.
