Ibrahim Aliyu scores as Columbus Crew snap six-game winless streak

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye
Nigeria forward Ibrahim Aliyu starred as Columbus Crew returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 2-1 home victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC, ending a six-match winless run in Major League Soccer.
The former Flying Eagles star played a pivotal role, opening the scoring early and earning praise from head coach Wilfried Nancy.
Aliyu struck just two minutes into the match, finishing off a well-worked move set up by Lassi Lappalainen, who was making his first start for the American club.
Although Vancouver responded with a quick equalizer four minutes later, Diego Rossi restored the lead for Columbus in the 25th minute, a goal that ultimately secured all three points.
The victory came on the heels of a heavy 5-1 defeat to Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami and also marked the end of Vancouver’s perfect away record this season.
“I’m really pleased with the goal,” said head coach Wilfried Nancy during the post-match press conference.
“Aliyu played in a position he’s not used to — as a wingback. But this is what we want from our wingbacks: attacking involvement and good movement. Lassi and Aliyu executed it perfectly.”
Nancy also highlighted the tactical significance of Lappalainen’s contribution. “Lassi, as a right wingback, assisted the left wingback. That’s the dynamic we want to create. The action was really interesting and helped set the tone.”
With the win, Columbus Crew climb back into playoff contention and will look to build momentum when they travel to face Atlanta United in their next fixture.
