Klopp set to be unveiled as new Germany head coach on Friday

Jurgen Klopp is expected to be confirmed as Germany’s new head coach on Friday in a landmark move that will see the former Liverpool manager take charge of the national team until after the 2030 World Cup.

The German Football Association (DFB) has called a press conference in Frankfurt without stating the agenda, but leading newspaper Bild says the event will be used to present Klopp as successor to Julian Nagelsmann.

Senior DFB committees are scheduled to meet by video conference on Friday morning to give final formal approval to the appointment, clearing the way for an official announcement later in the day.

High-profile unveiling in Frankfurt

According to Bild, Klopp will appear on the podium at the press conference alongside DFB president Bernd Neuendorf, sporting director Rudi Voller and the federation’s spokesperson Franziska Wulle.

The move marks one of the most significant coaching appointments in German football for years, as the four-time world champions seek to re-establish themselves among the elite after a period of underachievement at major tournaments.

Klopp, 57, has been out of frontline management since stepping down at Liverpool, where he won the Premier League and Champions League and became one of the most sought-after coaches in world football.

Backroom team rebuilt around trusted lieutenants

The former Borussia Dortmund and Mainz coach is set to surround himself with several long-standing colleagues as he transitions into international management.

Peter Krawietz, Klopp’s long-time assistant and tactical analyst during his spells at Dortmund and Liverpool, will take on the role of assistant coach with the national team.

Also joining the backroom staff will be Dutch coach Pepijn Lijnders, who worked closely with Klopp at Liverpool and was a key figure in developing the team’s high-intensity style of play.

They will be joined by former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sven Bender – widely known by his nickname “Manni” – who recently brought his two-year spell with regional league side SpVgg Unterhaching to an end at the start of July. Bender is expected to add on-pitch and dressing-room insight from his years in the Bundesliga and with the national set-up.

Long-term deal points to 2030 World Cup

Bild reports that Klopp will sign a contract running until the end of the 2030 World Cup, underlining the DFB’s confidence that he can guide Germany back into contention for major honours.

Such a long-term agreement would cover multiple tournament cycles, including Euro 2028 and the expanded 48-team World Cup in 2030, giving Klopp time to reshape the squad and implement his philosophy at international level.

The deal only became possible after Klopp secured the approval of energy drinks giant Red Bull, with whom he was under contract until 2029 as global head of football – a role that initially did not contain a release clause.

No transfer fee – but a seven-figure donation

Unlike club football, no transfer fee will be paid to secure Klopp’s services. However, the DFB will provide financial compensation in the form of a donation to the Red Bull-linked spinal cord research charity, Wings for Life.

Bild says the contribution will amount to €1m (£840,000), effectively acting as a goodwill payment to facilitate Klopp’s exit from his Red Bull agreement.

New era for Germany and for Klopp

Klopp’s return to the dugout ends his brief spell away from day-to-day coaching following his departure from Anfield. He now faces the challenge of revitalising his home nation’s team amid intense public scrutiny and high expectations.

Germany, historically one of the most successful national sides in world football, have endured a turbulent period on and off the pitch, with early exits from recent major tournaments prompting calls for a reset.
