Lothar Matthaus says Michael Olise’s ninth-place Ballon d’Or finish was fair

Lothar Matthaus believes Michael Olise was placed fairly after the Bayern Munich winger finished ninth in the 2026 Ballon d’Or rankings.
Olise attended Monday’s ceremony in London to support Bayern team-mate Harry Kane, who won the award and brought the trophy back to the Bavarian club for the first time in 45 years.
The France international enjoyed an outstanding season for both Bayern Munich and his country. Some supporters of the German club may have felt Olise deserved a higher position, but former Germany captain Matthaus said the strength of the competition justified his final ranking.
“Olise finishing ninth is fair,” Matthaus wrote in a column for Sky Germany, which was reported by Yahoo Sport.
He pointed to the quality of the players who finished above Olise, including Rodri, Ousmane Dembele and Erling Haaland.
“You have to look at the names of the players who were ahead of him in the rankings, such as Rodri, Ousmane Dembele and Erling Haaland,” Matthaus said. “Overall, it was an excellent vote. I congratulate everyone who organised the process and made the decisions.”
Matthaus also backed Kane’s victory, saying the Bayern Munich striker was the clear choice for the prize.
“I am happy for everyone who receives an award, but I believe Harry Kane was the player who deserved the Ballon d’Or more than anyone else,” he wrote.
Kane’s success marked the end of Bayern Munich’s 45-year wait for the men’s Ballon d’Or. His win came after a season in which he was recognised for his sustained performances and influence.
“This award represents recognition for a player who produced consistent levels throughout an entire season, entertained the fans and was a role model,” Matthaus added.
