Lunin reveals the details behind Real Madrid’s 2-1 Clasico victory over Barcelona

Andriy Lunin said discipline, determination and collective effort were decisive as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Spotify Camp Nou in the Clasico.
The Ukraine goalkeeper replaced Thibaut Courtois, who was ruled out with a severe cold, and produced an impressive display. His most important contribution came when the score was 1-1, when he made a crucial save to deny Barcelona a potentially decisive goal.
Lunin acknowledged that playing away from home made the contest more difficult, but said Real Madrid’s desire to win ultimately made the difference.
“Discipline and fighting spirit, because we really wanted to win the match,” he said. “Playing away from home is more difficult, but we took three very important points.”
Lunin credits daily work for crucial save
Asked about the save that kept Real Madrid in the game, Lunin highlighted the influence of goalkeeping coach Nuno and the importance of preparation.
He said Nuno’s repeated assessment of “good training” reflected the value of consistent work and maintaining a high level of readiness every day.
Lunin also stressed that major matches demand a strong collective response, particularly when facing opponents such as Barcelona. He said Real Madrid had to remain united and show it could withstand pressure and difficult moments until the final whistle.
The victory was Real Madrid’s fifth in a row, but Lunin warned that the team could not afford to become satisfied with its recent results.
The Ukraine international said the priority was to continue improving and remain on the right path during the next stage of the season, rather than allowing the winning run to reduce the team’s focus.
He also addressed Real Madrid’s ability to settle matches in the closing stages. According to Lunin, the club had shown that quality over a number of years, but still needed to place greater emphasis on its work during matches.
He said the team’s ambitions required every player to continue working harder and maintain concentration on the pitch.
Barcelona’s next listed La Liga fixture is against Deportivo Alaves on 31 October 2026.
Real Madrid are scheduled to face Racing Santander in La Liga on 01 November 2026.
