Nigeria face crucial Tanzania double-header in AFCON 2027 qualifying

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching AFCON 2027 will be shaped by two November matches against Tanzania, despite the co-hosts already having secured their place in the finals.

The Super Eagles are second in Group L with three points, but Guinea-Bissau lead on six points after winning both of their matches. Tanzania and Madagascar have one point each.

Only one qualifying place remains available in the group because Tanzania have automatic qualification as co-hosts. That leaves Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau competing for the single ticket, following Nigeria’s 3-0 defeat by Guinea-Bissau on matchday two.

The results have also left Nigeria with an inferior goal difference. Their figure is minus two, compared with Guinea-Bissau’s plus five, giving the leaders a seven-goal advantage if the teams finish level on points.

Tanzania tests could decide the race

Nigeria will meet Tanzania at home and away in November, while Guinea-Bissau face Madagascar twice.

Tanzania cannot be knocked out of the qualification race because their finals place is already guaranteed. They therefore have no points-based qualification pressure, whereas both Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau must continue collecting results.

For Nigeria, the situation is straightforward but difficult. They need maximum points from the two games against Tanzania, while also hoping Guinea-Bissau drop points in their meetings with Madagascar.

Any failure to win against Tanzania would give Guinea-Bissau further control of the group. The goal-difference deficit means Nigeria may also need to win convincingly if the two sides end the campaign level on points.

Guinea-Bissau’s three-point advantage means Nigeria are chasing from behind, with the November fixtures providing the next decisive opportunity to close the gap.

Attention will now turn to the next Super Eagles squad announcement, which will reveal the players Eric Chelle selects for the two matches.

Preparations for the fixtures are already under way, with two NPFL stars leading the charge as Nigeria’s camp opens. The make-up of the squad and Chelle’s choices will be central to the team’s attempt to recover from the defeat by Guinea-Bissau and keep their qualification hopes alive.
