NPFL title race: Enugu Rangers can move clear of Rivers United

Rivers United and Enugu Rangers remain level on 17 points at the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), but Rangers have the advantage of a game in hand after Matchday 9.

Rivers United were held to a goalless draw by Barau FC at home, leaving them tied with Enugu Rangers. However, Rangers have played eight matches compared with Rivers United’s nine, according to the Nigerian Matchday table.

That means Enugu Rangers will move into outright first place if they win their outstanding fixture. Rivers United, meanwhile, can only retain their current position until Rangers play their game in hand.

Sporting Lagos moved up to third with a 3-2 victory away to Plateau United on Sunday, 18 October. The result took them to 15 points, two behind the leading pair.

Plateau United, Barau FC and Nasarawa United are all on 14 points, meaning only three points separate the top six teams in the standings.

Sporting Lagos rise after five-goal contest

Sporting Lagos secured their third-place position in a match that produced five goals at Plateau United.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Niger Tornadoes defeated Ikorodu City 2-1, while Kano Pillars recorded a narrow 1-0 win over Katsina United.

Nasarawa United won 2-0 at Inter Lagos, and Enyimba were held to a 0-0 home draw by Warri Wolves.

The weekend programme began on Friday, 16 October, when Shooting Stars beat Ranchers Bees 3-1.

There were two draws on Saturday. Doma United and Kun Khalifat finished 1-1, and Kwara United drew 1-1 with Abia Warriors.

Soccernet said it was unable to verify the standings against the league’s own page, so the table figures above are based on the Nigerian Matchday report.

The league remains a significant source of players for the Nigeria national team, with several Super Eagles call-ups coming from the NPFL, as Soccernet reported in “2 NPFL stars lead charge as Nigeria’s camp opens”.

Tight race at the summit

The identical points total at the top does not reflect the full picture because Enugu Rangers have a match remaining. A victory in that game would take them beyond Rivers United and give them sole possession of first place.

The competition below the leading two is equally close. Sporting Lagos have 15 points, while Plateau United, Barau FC and Nasarawa United each have 14.

With such narrow gaps across the top six, the Matchday 10 results could significantly alter the order. The next round will indicate whether Rivers United can maintain their lead on matches played or whether Enugu Rangers will use their advantage to establish a clear gap.
