NSC, NFF Set Up Welfare Committee to Support Super Falcons’ WAFCON Title Defence

The National Sports Commission (NSC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has established a seven-member Welfare Committee to provide support for the Nigeria’s senior women’s national team ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The committee was inaugurated following a meeting between the Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, and the NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, in Abuja on Wednesday.
NFF Executive Committee member Aisha Falode will serve as chairperson of the committee, while Ruth David has been named secretary. Other members are Rt. Hon. Margaret Icheen, Babagana Kalli, Emeka Iyama, Aderonke Tinuoye and Tobechukwu Oluchi.
Speaking on the development, Olopade reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring a successful campaign for the 10-time African champions, stressing that players’ welfare remains a top priority.
According to him, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu are fully supportive of the Super Falcons’ mission to retain their continental crown in Morocco.
“The President and the First Lady are committed to seeing the Super Falcons successfully defend their title. This committee has therefore been established to work alongside the NFF in ensuring a seamless campaign for the team,” Olopade said.
He noted that the welfare of players is crucial to achieving success at major tournaments.
“Welfare is a non-negotiable aspect of any successful team. With this committee in place, the players can be assured that both the NSC and the NFF are taking their welfare seriously throughout the WAFCON campaign,” he added.
Dr Sanusi described the initiative as a significant milestone, noting that it is the first time a dedicated welfare committee has been created for the senior women’s national team ahead of a major competition.
He said the move reflects the growing commitment of both the NSC and the NFF to the advancement of women’s football in Nigeria.
“For us at the NFF, this demonstrates the importance the NSC attaches to women’s football. It is a significant step that will further accelerate the growth of the women’s game in the country,” Sanusi stated.
He clarified that the committee would complement existing structures rather than take over the duties of team officials, with its primary role being to provide additional support and ensure a smooth tournament experience for the players and technical crew.
The Super Falcons will travel to Morocco aiming to reinforce their dominance in African women’s football by successfully defending the WAFCON title.
