Heartland Queens Make History, Reach First-Ever Federation Cup Final

Heartland Queens of Owerri carved their names into Nigerian football history on Wednesday, defeating FC Robo Queens 2-1 in a thrilling President Federation Cup semi-final clash in Benin City to secure their first-ever appearance in the competition’s final.

The victory marks a historic achievement for the Obi Ogbala-led side, who became the first women’s team from Nigeria’s South-East region to reach the final of the prestigious Federation Cup.

Determined to make a statement, the Owerri Landladies started brightly and took control of the game from the opening whistle, pressing aggressively and forcing their Lagos-based opponents onto the back foot.

Their early dominance was rewarded in the 18th minute when prolific striker Umejiaku Oluebube, popularly known as “The Headmaster,” showcased her aerial prowess. The in-form forward rose above the defence to power home a superb header from a well-delivered ball, giving Heartland Queens a deserved lead.

Oluebube nearly doubled the advantage before halftime, but her effort drifted narrowly off target as Heartland Queens went into the break with a slender lead.

FC Robo Queens returned for the second half with renewed purpose and found an equaliser shortly after the restart. Tosin Rafiu finished clinically to bring the Lagos side level and set up a tense contest for a place in the final.

Undeterred by the setback, Heartland Queens continued to push forward. Oluebube remained a constant menace and came close twice to restoring her side’s advantage, only to be denied by resolute defending and sharp goalkeeping from Robo.

With extra time appearing inevitable, Heartland Queens found the decisive breakthrough in dramatic fashion. In the 87th minute, defender Faith Samson emerged as the unlikely hero, rising highest inside a crowded penalty area to head home a perfectly delivered corner kick from Chizoba Johnson.

The powerful header sparked wild celebrations among the Heartland bench and supporters, as the Owerri side moved within touching distance of a historic victory.

Heartland Queens expertly managed the closing stages, frustrating every attempt by FC Robo Queens to force another equaliser before the final whistle confirmed their place in the final.

Scenes of jubilation followed as the Owerri Landladies celebrated a landmark triumph that has cemented their place in the club’s history.

Heartland Queens will now face Nasarawa Amazons in the President Federation Cup final on July 11 in Asaba, Delta State, with the opportunity to cap a remarkable campaign by lifting their first major trophy.

For the Owerri side, the dream remains alive—and history is now within reach.
