OFFICIAL: Leeds United sign Nigerian-German striker Lukas Nmecha on two-year deal

By Dayo Awoniyi

Leeds United have confirmed the signing of German international striker Lukas Nmecha on a two-year contract, the club announced Monday.

Nmecha, 26, will officially join the newly promoted Premier League side on July 1 following the expiration of his contract with Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg. He becomes Leeds’ first signing of the summer transfer window.

Born in Germany to Nigerian parents, Nmecha has spent the past four seasons at Wolfsburg and has previously played in England for Manchester City and Middlesbrough.

His arrival reunites him with Leeds manager Daniel Farke, under whom he played during a loan spell at Preston North End.

In a statement, Leeds said they were pleased to secure Nmecha’s signature despite interest from other Premier League clubs.

“Leeds United are delighted to announce Lukas Nmecha has agreed to join the club on an initial two-year contract when his current deal expires at VfL Wolfsburg,” the club said.

“Having fought off competition from other Premier League sides, everyone at Leeds United looks forward to welcoming Lukas to Elland Road.”

Nmecha expressed his enthusiasm about the move and the opportunity to return to English football.

“I’m excited to be part of this project and can’t wait to get started,” he said.

“Leeds is a club with a great history and a passionate fan base. I’m looking forward to helping the team succeed in the Premier League.”

Leeds United secured promotion back to the Premier League after a one-year absence, finishing second in the Championship last season.
