Osimhen leads Nigeria’s Ballon d’Or roll of honour

Victor Osimhen holds the record for Nigeria’s highest Ballon d’Or finish after placing eighth in 2023, ahead of fellow Nigerian greats Nwankwo Kanu, Ademola Lookman and Finidi George.
The four players have represented different generations of Nigerian football and earned recognition among the world’s leading players through their club achievements and international performances.
Osimhen’s ranking came after an outstanding campaign with Napoli. The Super Eagles striker was central to the club’s Serie A title success in the 2022/2023 season, when Napoli won the Italian league championship for the first time in 33 years.
He scored 26 league goals, finishing as Serie A’s leading goalscorer and establishing himself as one of Europe’s most feared forwards. His eighth-place finish remains Nigeria’s best result in the Ballon d’Or voting.
Kanu’s Olympic triumph and European success
Nwankwo Kanu finished 11th in the 1996 Ballon d’Or rankings after a year in which he captained Nigeria’s Dream Team to Olympic gold at the Atlanta 1996 Games.
Nigeria became the first African nation to win the men’s Olympic football tournament, with Kanu playing a prominent role in the team’s memorable campaign.
The forward had also enjoyed success with Ajax before moving to Inter Milan. Those achievements helped make him one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers of his generation.
Lookman’s European final hat-trick
Ademola Lookman was ranked 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or after a standout season with Atalanta.
His defining moment came in the UEFA Europa League final, when he scored a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen. The performance delivered Atalanta’s first European trophy and brought Leverkusen’s remarkable unbeaten run to an end.
Lookman also strengthened his standing internationally through his performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in 2024.
Finidi part of Ajax’s 1995 success
Finidi George completed the list with a 21st-place finish in the 1995 Ballon d’Or voting.
The former Super Eagles winger was an important member of the Ajax side that won the UEFA Champions League in 1995, helping the Dutch club establish itself among Europe’s leading teams.
He had also been part of Nigeria’s victorious 1994 Africa Cup of Nations squad. His pace, creativity and attacking contribution made him one of the key figures in a golden generation of Nigerian players.
The rankings underline Nigeria’s continuing influence on world football, with its leading players earning recognition across successive eras.
Osimhen’s eighth-place finish has set the country’s benchmark. The next generation of Nigerian footballers will now have the opportunity to surpass it and potentially produce Nigeria’s first Ballon d’Or winner.
