Piers Morgan brands Argentina players ‘immoral idiots’ after World Cup semi-final defeat

Piers Morgan has launched a furious tirade against Argentina’s national team – calling its players “immoral idiots” and invoking the Falklands War – after England’s 2026 World Cup semi-final loss to Lionel Messi’s side.
The British broadcaster’s outburst came on social media platform X following England’s 2-1 defeat on Wednesday, a result that sent Argentina through to the final against Spain on Sunday.
England had taken the lead through Anthony Gordon, before Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez struck to complete a comeback that ended England’s hopes of reaching the final.
Morgan, a long‐time admirer of Cristiano Ronaldo and a frequent critic of Messi, used the match to revive both the Messi–Ronaldo debate and the long‐running sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as Islas Malvinas.
Mocking Messi during England’s early lead
According to Argentine newspaper La Nacion, Morgan began the evening by jeering at Argentina’s captain as England appeared in control.
“هل يلعب ميسي؟”
(“Is Messi playing?”)
He posted the jibe during the first half, when England were still ahead thanks to Gordon’s opener.
Minutes after the goal, Morgan followed up with another message aimed at England manager Thomas Tuchel, criticising the German’s tactical approach despite the early advantage. The content of that criticism was not reported, but it reflected his long‐standing willingness to publicly question coaches’ decisions.
One-word reaction as England crash out
The mood shifted dramatically after Argentina overturned the deficit with goals from Fernandez and Martinez, securing their place in the World Cup final.
Morgan, a former newspaper editor and high‐profile television host, closed out his live commentary with a single, exasperated post after the final whistle:
“FFS ”
The three-letter abbreviation is commonly used in English as a profane expression of anger and frustration.
Anger over Malvinas banner
Morgan’s strongest remarks came after the match, when images circulated of several Argentina players holding up a white banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Malvinas are Argentine”).
He responded with a post on X that combined an insult to the players with a reference to the 1982 Falklands War between the UK and Argentina:
“حمقى عديمو الاخلاق. اتمنى ان تسحقهم اسبانيا في النهايي كما سحقناهم في حرب الفوكلاند”.
(“Immoral idiots. I hope Spain destroy them in the final like we destroyed them in the Falklands War.”)
The Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, remain the subject of a bitter sovereignty dispute, with Argentina continuing to claim the archipelago it calls Islas Malvinas.
Previous clash with Argentine minister
Morgan’s clash with Argentina over the islands did not start with Wednesday’s semi-final.
Around two and a half months earlier, he had exchanged sharp words online with Argentina’s economy minister, Luis Caputo, after Caputo commented on a hypothetical scenario involving former US president Donald Trump and the Falklands.
Caputo had said that if “اراد دونالد ترامب انتزاع جزر فوكلاند من بريطانيا، فعلينا نحن ان نطالب بها” – “if Donald Trump wanted to take the Falkland Islands from Britain, then we should lay claim to them”.
The minister’s remark prompted criticism in the UK and renewed debate over the status of the islands.
Spotlight on politics at the World Cup
Morgan’s latest intervention underlines how the 2026 World Cup has become a platform not only for footballing drama but also for political symbolism and historic grievances.
Argentina’s players now prepare to face Spain in Sunday’s final, while England are left to reflect on a semi-final exit overshadowed, in part, by a British media figure’s highly charged reaction that has reignited tensions over one of the most sensitive issues in Anglo‐Argentine relations.
