President Tinubu fulfils cash promise to Super Falcons after WAFCON 2024 triumph

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has fulfilled his $100,000 financial reward pledge to Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their historic triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The players have begun receiving payments of approximately ₦140 million, representing the naira equivalent of the $100,000 reward promised by the President after Nigeria secured a record-extending 10th continental title.

The Super Falcons produced a remarkable comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final in July 2025 after falling two goals behind, reclaiming the African crown and further establishing their dominance in women’s football on the continent.

Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for fulfilling his promise, describing the gesture as a welcome recognition of the team’s achievement and contribution to Nigerian sports.

The payment further highlights the Federal Government’s commitment to rewarding sporting excellence and motivating Nigerian athletes to achieve greater success on the international stage.

Tinubu had similarly fulfilled his $100,000 reward pledge to members of D’Tigress following their triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, where Nigeria secured a fifth consecutive continental championship.

Meanwhile, the National Sports Commission (NSC), under the leadership of Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade, has continued to pursue reforms focused on athlete welfare, international exposure and the development of sports administration.

The Commission has also overseen Nigeria’s hosting of about 30 international sporting competitions, further strengthening the country’s profile as a destination for major sporting events.

The NSC commended President Tinubu for his consistent support for Nigerian athletes, noting that the fulfilment of reward promises reinforces confidence among sports administrators and competitors.

It added that recognising sporting achievements through tangible rewards would encourage a culture of excellence, accountability and national pride.
