Super Falcons react to receiving Tinubu’s cash promise for WAFCON 2024 success

Two members of Nigeria’s Super Falcons squad and a member of the team’s technical crew have confirmed receiving their presidential cash rewards following the country’s historic triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), bringing fresh confirmation that the Federal Government has begun fulfilling its financial commitment to the champions.
The beneficiaries confirmed that their accounts were credited on Monday, November 2, 2026, with the naira equivalent of the dollar rewards approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after Nigeria secured a record-extending 10th continental title in Morocco in July 2025.
One of the players, speaking anonymously, confirmed receipt of the payment, saying: “I can confirm that the money has entered my account. We received the alert today, and I am grateful that the promise has finally been fulfilled.”
Another member of the squad also acknowledged receiving the payment, describing the development as welcome news for the players who had waited for the fulfilment of the presidential commitment. “Yes, I have received mine. It is encouraging to see the promise translated into payment. We appreciate Mr President for honouring his commitment to the team,” the player said.
A member of the technical crew equally confirmed receiving the financial reward, expressing appreciation to the President and the authorities involved in processing the payments. “I can confirm that my account has been credited. We are grateful to the President and everyone who worked to ensure that the payment was completed,” the official said.
Following the Super Falcons’ dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over hosts Morocco in the final, President Tinubu approved the naira equivalent of $100,000 for each of the 24 players and $50,000 for each member of the 11-person technical crew. The President also conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on the team and approved three-bedroom apartments for the players and officials.
The payment confirmation follows earlier assurances from the National Sports Commission that the financial rewards had been processed. NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko had disclosed in July 2026 that the players’ $100,000 rewards had been paid into their respective accounts, while the Commission subsequently presented housing documents and national honours certificates to members of the team in Morocco.
Nigeria’s victory in the 2024 WAFCON final remains one of the most memorable moments in the history of the competition. The Falcons recovered from two goals down, with Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi and Jennifer Echegini scoring to secure a remarkable 3-2 victory and extend Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.
The latest confirmations provide further evidence of the implementation of the presidential reward package, which the NSC has described as part of the Federal Government’s commitment to recognising sporting excellence and improving athletes’ welfare.
The payments represent the fulfillment of a significant financial commitment made after their historic achievement, while reinforcing the importance of ensuring that promises made to national teams are matched by timely delivery.
