PSG weigh three options to replace injured Khvicha Kvaratskhelia
Paris St-Germain manager Luis Enrique faces a difficult decision over how to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia after the Georgia winger was ruled out for several months with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
The injury was confirmed a day after PSG’s 4-2 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League, leaving the French club to consider how best to cover the 24-year-old’s prolonged absence.
Godts, Akliouche and Doue among the alternatives
The most straightforward solution would be to use players capable of operating in Kvaratskhelia’s usual position.
Belgium international Mika Godts is viewed as the natural replacement. Although he is still adapting, he has shown some encouraging signs since joining PSG.
Maghnes Akliouche is another possibility. His technical ability and versatility allow him to play on either wing or in midfield, giving Enrique flexibility in how he reshapes his attack.
Desire Doue could also be used in the role. Like Akliouche, he is able to operate in several attacking positions and would offer the manager another internal option.
Could Nuno Mendes move further forward?
A second route would see Enrique change the position of an existing player and use him in Kvaratskhelia’s place.
According to Foot Mercato, citing L’Equipe and Le Parisien, PSG are considering deploying Portugal left-back Nuno Mendes in a more advanced position because of his attacking qualities.
That option remains uncertain, however. Mendes is still expected to miss several more weeks through injury, while moving him into a wing role would require PSG to reorganise their defence.
Lucas Hernandez and Lucas Beraldo are among the possible choices to cover at the back if Mendes is pushed forward. Warren Zaire-Emery could also be considered, although he is more accustomed to playing at right-back than on the left.
Young players trusted, January signing possible
PSG have told Le Parisien that Senny Mayulu and Quentin Ndjantou are highly regarded by the club and will each have a role in the rotation Enrique uses over the coming period.
The pair could therefore be given greater opportunities as PSG manage their squad in Kvaratskhelia’s absence.
A third option would be to recruit a left winger during the winter transfer window. The club have not ruled out making a signing to compensate for the Georgian’s lengthy lay-off, which would give Enrique a more direct replacement rather than relying solely on positional changes or internal alternatives.
