Real Madrid receive positive Federico Valverde injury update after Barcelona win

Initial tests have ruled out a serious injury for Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde after he was forced off during the Clasico against Barcelona.

Valverde played for more than 40 minutes while experiencing pain in his hamstring before Jose Mourinho replaced him with Denzel Dumfries.

Real Madrid secured victory at Spotify Camp Nou, but concern over the Uruguay international’s fitness was the only negative aspect of their visit to Barcelona. Mourinho confirmed the issue during his post-match news conference, explaining that Valverde had continued despite the discomfort before being substituted.

According to the British newspaper The Athletic, medical examinations carried out at Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training complex found no serious damage. Valverde is believed to have suffered the pain during an incident in the Clasico and completed the final 40 minutes while affected by it.

Real Madrid will now monitor his condition during training this week. The club is expected to avoid taking risks with the player, and he could be rested against Racing Santander on 1 November 2026 if he does not recover fully.

Barcelona are scheduled to face Deportivo Alaves in La Liga on 31 October 2026, while Real Madrid’s next league fixture is against Racing Santander on 1 November 2026.

Valverde’s tactical importance

Valverde’s role at right-back has given Mourinho a tactical advantage in recent matches. It allows the manager to select Arda Guler in the starting line-up while also adding technical quality and greater mental strength to midfield.

The Uruguay international’s contribution extends beyond his work with the ball. His physical ability and constant movement on the right flank have provided Real Madrid with a level of balance the team had been unable to achieve in earlier periods.

That is why the coaching staff are paying particular attention to his recovery. If Valverde is unable to return in time to face Racing Santander, Mourinho will have to reconsider the team’s shape and approach.

Denzel Dumfries appears to be the most straightforward replacement after coming on for Valverde during the Clasico. However, selecting a conventional right-back would remove an additional midfielder from the side an approach that has proved effective for Real Madrid in recent matches.

The club are keen to manage Valverde’s playing time and rest him when necessary. Real Madrid do not want the current pain to develop into a more serious injury that could keep him out for a longer period, particularly with important fixtures ahead in the race for both La Liga and the Champions League.

His availability for the next match will depend on how he responds during training over the coming days.
