Remo Stars clinch first-ever NPFL title in historic win on club president’s birthday

By Dayo Awoniyi

Remo Stars have etched their name into Nigerian football history after winning their first Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title, following a 1-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes on matchday 35.

The hard-fought win at their home ground was sealed by Olamilekan Adedayo’s 84th-minute strike, sparking jubilant scenes among fans and players. The victory was made even more memorable as it came on the 59th birthday of club founder and president, Chief Kunle Soname.

The Sky Blue Stars’ journey to the top has been marked by steady progress over recent seasons.

After finishing third in the 2021/2022 campaign and narrowly missing out on the title last season, they finally achieved their long-sought goal—capping years of investment, planning, and determination.

“This is the perfect birthday gift,” said a visibly emotional Chief Soname, who watched from the stands as his team made history.

The Ikenne-based club’s rise has been one of the most compelling stories in recent NPFL seasons, and their maiden title stands as a testament to the club’s resilience and growth.

As the final whistle blew, celebrations erupted in Ikenne, with fans hailing both the players and technical staff for delivering the title.

With three matches still to play, Remo Stars have an unassailable lead at the top of the table, making them champions-elect of the 2024/25 NPFL season.

Their historic achievement not only marks a new era for the club but also highlights the visionary leadership of Chief Soname, whose birthday will now forever be linked with Remo Stars’ greatest footballing triumph.
