Rivers United and Enugu Rangers meet with NPFL summit at stake

Rivers United, Enugu Rangers and Nasarawa United are level on 17 points at the top of the NPFL, with Rivers hosting Rangers in the standout Matchday 11 fixture on Sunday 1 November.
Rivers lead the Nigerian Matchday table on goal difference, with a +10 record from 10 matches. Enugu Rangers are second on +5, having collected their 17 points from only eight games, while Nasarawa United are third on +3 after 10 matches.
Plateau United and Barau FC are next on 15 points, alongside Bendel Insurance, Sporting Lagos, Kano Pillars and Niger Tornadoes.
Rivers go into the meeting with Rangers after a 2-1 defeat away to Bendel Insurance on Sunday 25 October, a result included in Soccernet’s NPFL results roundup. Nasarawa United strengthened their position with a 1-0 victory against Enyimba.
Niger Tornadoes also won 1-0 at Abia Warriors, while Kun Khalifat beat Inter Lagos by the same score. Warri Wolves and Kano Pillars played out a goalless draw, Ikorodu City drew 2-2 with Shooting Stars, and Barau FC were held 1-1 by Kwara United.
Katsina United and Plateau United finished 2-2, while Soccernet also previewed the match between Bendel Insurance and Rivers United.
Matchday 11 fixtures
Niger Tornadoes begin the round at home to Barau FC on Friday 30 October, with kick-off listed for 15:00 WAT. Doma United face Ikorodu City on Saturday.
The majority of the fixtures are scheduled for Sunday 1 November at 16:00 WAT:
– Rivers United v Enugu Rangers
– Kano Pillars v Nasarawa United
– Kwara United v Bendel Insurance
– Katsina United v Sporting Lagos
– Plateau United v Warri Wolves
– Shooting Stars v Abia Warriors
– Enyimba v Kun Khalifat
– Inter Lagos v Ranchers Bees
Rangers’ games in hand add importance
The standings do not fully reflect the closeness of the contest. Enugu Rangers have played two fewer matches than Rivers United, meaning victory in either of those games in hand would take them above the leaders.
That makes Sunday’s meeting particularly significant. A win for Rivers would open a three-point advantage over Rangers, although Rangers would still have their two outstanding fixtures. A Rangers victory would instead put them three points clear of Rivers and give them the head-to-head advantage.
The competition behind the leading three is also tightly packed, with six clubs on 15 points. Kano Pillars’ away match against Nasarawa United could therefore have an immediate impact on whether Nasarawa retain their place in the top three.
