Super Falcons sweep aside Egypt as Nigeria reach WAFCON quarter-finals
Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a convincing 6-2 victory over Egypt in their final Group Stage match, with several players producing standout performances.
Malawi also progressed to the quarter-finals, while Zambia were eliminated from the competition after the group-stage results.
Player-by-player assessment
The goalkeeper had a largely untroubled evening as Nigeria controlled much of the match. However, she was unable to finish with a clean sheet after Egypt scored twice.
The right-back showed clear improvement in her second start of the tournament. Her performance was more assured, helping Nigeria maintain their attacking momentum while also contributing defensively.
The centre-back was particularly willing to move forward and support the Super Falcons’ attacks. She made several forays into advanced positions and was unfortunate not to complete an impressive display with a goal.
Ucheibe adapted smoothly to the centre-back position and looked composed throughout the contest. She completed her performance by calmly converting Nigeria’s fourth goal from the penalty spot.
Another strong showing came from the full-back, who played an important role in the result by winning the penalty that led to Nigeria’s fifth goal.
The midfielder produced a neat and disciplined display, although she remained largely peripheral to the main action and offered little threat in the final third.
One of the midfielders delivered an energetic and influential performance and was among Nigeria’s most effective players. Her contribution was described as one of her finest displays for the Super Falcons.
Ijamilusi endured a quieter outing and struggled to make a significant impact before being replaced by Uchenna Kanu in the 56th minute.
The captain found it difficult to settle into the match during the first half, but improved considerably after the interval. She scored once and also provided an assist as Nigeria pulled further away from Egypt.
The AS Roma forward made an impressive tournament debut. She created two goals for her team-mates and was rewarded with the Player of the Match award.
The experienced striker worked hard and made a positive contribution before being forced to leave the pitch because of injury. She opened the scoring for Nigeria with a confidently taken penalty.
Monday supplied plenty of energy and completed her contribution by scoring Nigeria’s second goal of the game.
Uchenna Kanu, introduced for Folashade Ijamilusi in the 56th minute, made an immediate impact. She scored soon after coming on and also won a penalty for the Super Falcons.
Omewa marked her WAFCON debut with a goal, offering further evidence of her potential and establishing herself as a player to watch in the future.
