Victor Osimhen ‘too emotional’ to captain Galatasaray, claims leading Turkish pundit

Victor Osimhen’s fiery on‐field temperament should rule him out of becoming Galatasaray captain despite his outstanding performances, a prominent Turkish football analyst has warned.

Debate over new Galatasaray captain

Turkish sports journalist Bulent Timurlenk says Osimhen “wholeheartedly deserves” the armband on merit, but believes his emotional reactions and clashes with officials and opponents make him a risky choice to lead the Turkish champions.

Galatasaray must appoint a new captain for the coming season following the departure of Argentine striker Mauro Icardi. Nigeria international Osimhen has quickly emerged as one of the main candidates, alongside Turkey defender Abdulkerim Bardakcı.

Head coach Okan Buruk has publicly acknowledged that Osimhen brings the type of personality and leadership the Istanbul club will need in the post‐Icardi era. The forward’s goals, work rate and influence in the dressing room have reportedly impressed the technical staff.

But Timurlenk has urged caution, arguing that the 25‐year‐old’s mentality, rather than his ability, is the real issue.

‘Body language and anger’ key concerns

In an interview with Turkish outlet Sabah, Timurlenk set out in detail why he believes the Super Eagles star should not be handed the armband at this stage of his Galatasaray career.

“While Osimhen wholeheartedly deserves the captaincy, his body language and inability to control his anger in his interactions with referees, opponents, and sometimes teammates, are obstacles to being a good captain,” Timurlenk toldSabah.

“Osimhen plays professionally but with an amateur spirit. The technical staff will certainly want to honor him with the armband, but the practical reality on the field is that Abdulkerim is Galatasaray’s first captain.”

Timurlenk’s comments highlight a wider debate within elite football over what matters most in a captain: talent and influence, or emotional control and communication with match officials.

Bardakcı backed as ‘practical’ first choice

Abdulkerim Bardakcı, a Turkiye international centre‐back, is seen by Timurlenk as the more pragmatic option. The 29‐year‐old already has experience wearing the armband, having captained Galatasaray several times last season.

His calmer demeanour, regular starting role in defence and existing status within the squad all strengthen his case to become Icardi’s long‐term successor as official captain.

The suggestion from Timurlenk is that a compromise could emerge inside the club: Osimhen might be symbolically honoured and treated as a leader in the dressing room, while Bardakcı acts as the primary on‐pitch captain, especially in high‐pressure matches.

International leadership for Nigeria

Osimhen’s suitability for leadership roles is being tested at international level as well. The former African Footballer of the Year has recently worn the captain’s armband for Nigeria, leading the Super Eagles in two of their last four competitive fixtures.

He captained the national side against Uganda and Morocco in qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, underlining the trust placed in him by Nigeria’s coaching staff.

Those displays for his country could strengthen his claim to greater responsibility at club level, even as figures like Timurlenk question how his emotional style translates to the demands of captaining a club as scrutinised as Galatasaray.

Absent from first pre‐season run‐out

Osimhen was not involved in Galatasaray’s opening pre‐season friendly on Friday, when the champions cruised to a 5‐1 victory over Umraniyespor at Umraniye City Stadium.

Buruk used the match to rotate his squad and assess options ahead of the new campaign, with selection decisions – including who leads the team out as captain – still to be finalised.

As preparations intensify, the discussion around Osimhen’s temperament and Bardakcı’s reliability is likely to continue, with Galatasaray supporters closely watching which player is ultimately chosen to wear one of the most high‐profile armbands in Turkish football.
