Warri Wolves appeal NPFL sanctions after attack on match officials

Warri Wolves have appealed against sanctions imposed by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after match officials were attacked following their goalless draw with Kano Pillars on Sunday.

The Seasiders were fined ₦4.2 million, deducted three points and three goals, and ordered to play their next five home league matches behind closed doors.

The club confirmed the appeal in a statement published on its official Facebook page. Warri Wolves are asking for leniency, pointing to their efforts to identify and apprehend the suspect involved in the incident.

“We wish to keep our teeming supporters and stakeholders abreast of the latest developments following the sanctions imposed on our beloved club by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL),” the statement read.

“Following the league’s decision, an appeal will be filed, requesting leniency in view of the efforts made by the club to apprehend the suspect, the available video evidence showing the club’s caution to the individual, and the subsequent arrest of the suspect.”

Warri Wolves acknowledged the seriousness of what happened and said they respected the league’s disciplinary process. The club added that it remained hopeful its appeal would be favourably considered.

Points deduction could affect league position

The Seasiders also stressed the possible effect of the points deduction on their position in the NPFL table.

They said that, if the punishment is upheld, their total would fall from 12 points to nine and they would drop from 14th to 17th place.

“The implications of the sanctions are significant. If the points deduction stands, Warri Wolves will drop from 12 points to 9 points and fall from 14th to 17th position on the league table,” the club said.

“While the club acknowledges the seriousness of the incident and respects the league’s disciplinary process, we remain hopeful that our appeal will receive favourable consideration.”

Club calls for calm

Describing the period as a difficult moment, Warri Wolves urged supporters to remain calm, united and steadfast while the appeal is considered.

“Warri Wolves is bigger than any individual, administration, coach or player. It is a legacy we must all protect,” the statement added.

“As we await the outcome of the appeal, let us continue to stand behind Warri Wolves The Seasiders.

“We hope for the best and trust that the appeal will receive fair and compassionate consideration.”
